Overview

After unfortunately having to cancel the 2020 series of archaeology talks at Flag Fen, we are thrilled to be able to host them virtually this year. Thanks to funding from the government's Culture Recovery Fund, we are also able to offer the 2021 series completely free of charge.

Our fourth talk will be given by Dr Sue Brunning, Curator of European Early Medieval & Sutton Hoo Collections from the Department of Britain, Europe and Prehistory at The British Museum. She specialises in early Anglo-Saxon material culture with a particular research interest in metalwork, beliefs and ritual, warrior culture, attitudes and world-views, and the life-histories of artefacts. Dr. Brunning has a special interest in the Sutton Hoo ship burial, its context and its associated archive

In Early Medieval England, old swords were highly prized treasures coveted by warriors, warlords and kings. They were placed in burials, depicted in art and lauded in literature. This talk explores the evidence for the phenomenon and seeks to understand why older was better when it came to one’s sword.

This event will take place online live and will be followed by a live Q&A. The email confirming your booking will provide the link to view the talk. Questions can be submitted throughout the talk, with a selection answered at the end, time permitting.
